Keeping a Family Together
When an unexpected eviction left a kinship family of 11 without a place to call home, everything they had worked so hard to build was suddenly in jeopardy.
The family, two dedicated caregivers raising five biological children and four children in foster care, was faced with an impossible question: How could they keep their family together while navigating an unexpected housing crisis?
Through Voices For Children's KINDship Care Program, immediate support was put into action. To help ease the burden during this difficult transition, we secured temporary storage for the family's belongings and arranged safe, temporary housing, giving the children a stable place to stay and the opportunity to simply enjoy being kids during their summer break.
At the same time, our team worked to address the long-term challenge. Because the eviction created barriers to securing new housing, we connected the caregivers with a realtor experienced in complex housing situations and a pro bono attorney who advocated on their behalf throughout the process.
Today, that family has been approved for a new home and is preparing to move in later this month.
